i used to think the center of things

was ruled by what you were doing

there's just too much water outside &

reckoning is a big part of this dagger-

mouthed scene you cannot look when

you say fuck this in the knee-deep at

the center of the field we are four

steps away from a new affair—i'm

being figurative here—adjust your

dress the light looks just right when

you stand

like that the excitement becomes the

boring part of our friday this is not

because no one was listening i was

listening & if i was listening all the

ducks will have their day & maybe we

can end a conversation without a

shouting match don't worry i'm taking

the blame there isn't room for you ok

ok everyone will say we can still

change—crawl into bed when it gets

cold & unleash the things you've been

holding christ even the dog knows

you've got something to unleash that's

not good enough the silence is not like

the mouth of the cave the silence isn't

really silence because of all the rain

there's something happening but its

glacial i'm not talking about the flood

i think i'll go with you on this one. the

dazzle of one of these dakota starlight

at a rest stop & no sign of changing

weather there isn't an answering

machine for miles but there is a box

of tapes in the attic is that water on

the carpet or oil? what is the black on

your sleeve? you did not know them

but the town lost their shit there is a

baby sleeping & yourmother is on the

phone fill this space because

emptiness is silence & silence aches

meaning into the shape born today
